Original Soviet PBF Hamster Gas Mask – USSR VDV Airborne Forces

This original Soviet PBF Gas Mask, commonly known by the nickname “Hamster” (Хомяк), is one of the most distinctive Soviet military gas masks of the 1970s. The PBF was associated with the Soviet VDV Airborne Forces and was designed as a compact protective mask without the large external filter canister seen on many other Soviet gas masks.

The unusual design uses two compact EO-19E filters positioned inside the mask around the cheek area. This gives the PBF its characteristic shape and explains its well-known collector nickname “Hamster.”

Its compact profile was particularly suitable for military use where bulky equipment could be inconvenient, including airborne applications. The PBF became closely associated with Soviet VDV paratroopers and today is a recognizable piece of Cold War Soviet military equipment.

The mask features round glass eyepieces, a rubber facepiece, internal filter compartments and the distinctive front valve assembly. Depending on the available set, it may also include its original Soviet military carrying bag.
